Join us on a spectacular three-day trek through the majestic “Rose Garden” of the Italian Alps in the company of six llamas. These empathetic creatures are sure to keep you motivated, soothed and entertained along the trails, as well as providing an unforgettable experience.
Along this route we hike through varied high alpine terrain – around fascinating rock formations, the scenery the backdrop of many local legends, experiencing South Tyrol mountain culture and that dreamy “alpine glow”.
This is a medium- difficult tour. Most of the routes are along RED (Austrian Classification) paths with some short sections of BLACK scrambling. You should be prepared to walk between 5-7 hrs per day at a relaxed pace – with the longest days’ ascent being around 1000m in total. The walking pace will be around 300m/hr (ascent).
We experience all types of hiking trail along this route- wide track, narrow footpaths, scree and rocky terrain as well as a couple of short sections of scrambling and few shorter exposed sections.
Join us for a pre-tour evening to meet the rest of the group (less the llamas) and relax into the South Tyrolean atmosphere before starting the trek.
Accommodation: (not included in tour price- €60/ person): Twin rooms with en-suite shower/ bath &WC and balcony (bed & breakfast included)
We start on the Seiseralm – the highest mountain plateau in Europe. Our trail takes us through these high mountain pastures into the kingdom on marmots. We pass underneath the distinctive teeth-like rocks- aptly named the Rosszähne (mammoth’s teeth) and over the pass to the perfectly positioned Tiersalphütte. After a refreshment stop, we head east descending into the Duron Valley- another world and ladin area. Our path then skirts around the mountain before our final climb to the Rifugio Antemoia set in the beautiful Valon de Antermoa surrounded by the peaks of Catinaccio, Croda dei Zirmei and the croda del lago and the legendary Lake Antemoia.
The second day we head passed the lake and into almost moonscape terrain as we ascend through the cauldron below the imposing Antemoia peak. Along the rocky trail we climb to the Antemoia pass, descending to the Passo Principe hut – a small hut clinging to the mountain side with the best coffee in this part of the Alps. Re-energised we give the llamas a break and take a small detour down the Vajolet valley and scramble up to see the famous towers and climbing mecca of the Vajolet rocks. We then reunite with our pack and continue our journey into another rocky bowl towards our hut for the night.
Our final day takes us back towards the Seiseralm. We ascend through the “bear’s hole” – a spectacular climb that takes us up to the south side of the Schlern. These rocky paths are ideal terrain for spotting Edelweiss flowers. We then reach the high point of the day – the plateau of the Schlern rock – with 360 panoramas. We make a compulsory stop at the impressive Schlern mountain hut- supping up the views and delicious South Tyrol fare. Our final strides are then down the north side and back into the world of the Seiser Alm where we end our tour.
During our tour we stay in two privately run mountain huts- picked for their wonderful majestic settings, as well as tradition and great atmosphere.
Where possible we are in private 2-4 bed rooms for our group. A sumptuous evening dinner is included both nights as well as breakfast in the mornings.
Due to limited water, showers are usually available but cost extra (approx. €3).
We also organise pre-tour accommodation for the night before the tour start (€60/ person) in twin rooms with en-suite shower/ bath & WC and balcony (bed & breakfast included).
The Seiseralm is the highest high alpine pasture in Europe. Covering an area of 56km2 and between a height of 1680 – 2350m above sea level. With the iconic Schlern mountain as its backdrop, the landscape is impressive on so many levels! Still used today for farming, the area is also a popular spot for all forms of alpine tourism, winter and summer. Up and above the bustling villages around the Alm, you climb beyond this to some of the most dramatic scenery in the Italian Dolomites.
So named according to the Ladin legend of King Laurin’s curse which transformed the Rose Garden into rocks – forgetting about that mystical time of day when the evening pink alpine glow – Alpenglüh (“enrosadira”) transforms the rocks into a rosy spectacle.
The trails around and between these rocks are breath-taking, with new impressions every few steps. The terrain within is rocky, rugged and remote. Conditions where the high alpine survivalist flora and fauna thrive (chamoix, ibex and edelweiss to name a few).
A magnificent glacial lake nestled below the bowl of the Antemoia peaks, it is the only lake within the whole Rosengarten range. Fed by melt water from small streams around, often hidden as is typical of the surrounding karst rock landscape. The turquoise blue waters form a striking contrast to this otherwise very bleak looking glacial corrie.
