Wild trails, breath-taking panoramas and alpine flora and fauna.
Hike through enchanting forest, explore rocky high alpine landscapes and feast your eyes on mesmerising lakes, gorges and panoramas. Observe the alpine creatures, that call these extreme environments home. Stay in remote, idyllic alpine refuges, immerse yourself in this true alpine experience and discover the delights of Slovenian mountain hospitality.
This four day trek takes you deep into the Triglav National Park, below the iconic Triglav peak, Slovenia’s highest mountain. An area renowned for its challenging climbs and via ferrata, this itinerary allows you to explore the most beautiful spots on foot, walk on trails with new vistas and panoramic views at every turn and experience the peace of being up in the alpine for multiple days.
Our four day circuit starts in the charming village Stara Fužina, on the edge of Lake Bohinj and leads us through forest, mountain basins, karst landscapes, over alpine passes, and through the renowned valley of lakes. Our final descent takes us back to Stara Fužina where we enjoy a dip in the stunning waters of Lake Bohinj, the largest, yet less developed lake in the Triglav National Park.
You can choose to make your way home, refreshed after these cool waters or choose to stay on for two more nights of relaxation and activity around Lake Bohinj - canoeing or SUP with the group.
Our first night is at a beautiful base close to our starting point. Throughout the trek, we stay in traditional mountain refuges- remote, basic yet full of warmth and hospitality. Where you can kick off your boots and rest on the sun terrace after the climb, or star gaze out the window at night.
Disconnect from the outside world, immerse yourself in the beauty of the wild landscapes, flora and fauna and find peace and perspective that accompanies you long after the trail ends.
Medium: This is a medium difficulty tour- perfect for walkers and hikers with a good fitness level. Most of the routes are along good paths with small sections of narrow, steeper, and exposed sections. You should be prepared to walk between 4-7 hrs per day – with the longest days’ ascent being 1300m overall.
The walking pace will be around 3km/hr.
A mix of trails – from easy, wider trails to some narrower, uneven, rocky paths - with a few exposed sections. Sure-footedness and head for heights are needed.
For those joining from Munich, we meet at Munich Central Station and take the train via Villach and Jesnice to arrive in the Bohinj region.
You have the early afternoon to explore the area around our base and discover some of the regional highlights.
We officially start late afternoon with a Welcome meeting, trek briefing and packing review, before enjoying a tasty dinner together.
Accommodation: Twin bed room. Single available at additional cost.
Dinner: Main meal & welcome drink.
Distance: 12km, Ascent: 1350m, Descent: 20m, Walking time: Approx 6-7 Hrs
After a hearty breakfast we head to the trail head in Stara Fužina. Walking out of this charming village we admire the beautifully kept traditional houses and farms, reflecting the efforts to sustain local crafts, culture and tradition.
Soon we hit a forested trail which takes us along the Mostnica gorge, with fascinating rock formations carved out by the force of water. Small pools and waterfalls provide a further feast for the eyes.
Our climb starts through beech forest along a windy, stony track. As we gain elevation, spruce and larch start appearing as do the late summer flowers, such as willow gentian.
Eventually we are above the tree line and the limestone peaks of the Triglav range make their first appearance into the backdrop. Before long, we take a turn and we are in the realm of the Triglav with wall to wall views of the range. Here we get our first peak of our hut for the night and before we know it, we’ve kicked off the boots and are sat on the sun terrace, cool drink in hand and supping up the incredible scenery.
Accommodation: Shared 4-6 bed room.
Lunch: Picnic lunch.
Dinner: Main course & dessert.
Distance: 9km, Ascent: 750m, Descent: 500mm, Walking time: Approx 5 Hrs
We leave our charming refuge and descend through botanical, rocky trails into the Veljo Pole basin. Zig-zagging through rock, young larch and dwarf pine, we climb the far side. Providing perfect habitat for high alpine creatures, here we stand a good chance to view marmot, chamois and ibex.
As we climb, the vegetation disappears, giving way to a moon-like landscape of karst rock and scree. After reaching our first pass of the day, we make a short detour to a small refuge for a coffee (and maybe cake!).
After this scenic and nourishing boost, we return to the pass and continue the climb to our highest pass at 2365m. The trail here is a mix of scree and rock, involving a bit of handwork to pick our way up. From the pass we have a clear view back to the Triglav and the surrounding peaks. The other side takes us through a stone sea of karst rock littered with deep dolines. We wind our way around this landscape and descend into the valley of the lakes. Again in terrain of the ibex, we keep our eyes peeled for theses alpine climbers. Soon enough we get the first glimpses of the colourful lakes below and our overnight refuge, perched on the mountainside. After a final climb, we reach the panoramic spot and relax with the vistas and impressions of the day.
Accommodation: Shared room.
Lunch: Picnic lunch.
Dinner: Main course & usually dessert.
Distance: 12km, Ascent: 350m, Descent: 800m, Walking time: Approx 4 -5 Hrs
We hit the trail early to enjoy taking our time along this especially scenic part of our route. We begin our descent into the valley of the lakes and walk along an enchanting trail between craggy dolomite rock and scree on the one side and smoothened karst rock faces on the other. Between which we meet crystal clear waters of lake after lake, nestling between rock and larch. Continuing between the whistles of marmots and larch forest, we draw closer to the idyllic setting of the Triglav Lake hut. The surrounding of lakes invite us to pause here to immerse ourselves in the scenery and also sample some delicious strudel at the hut.
Following our rest, we hit the trail that meanders along the mountainside with breathtaking panoramas that make you grin from ear to ear.
Our final climb takes us through a fairytale mix of rock, pine and forest. Eventually we reach our final refuge, situated above another deep green lake. It’s time to kick off the boots, relax on the wide sun terrace or take a nap in the grassy surroundings.
A hearty evening dinner awaits.
Accommodation: Shared 8-10 bed room
Lunch: Picnic lunch.
Dinner: Main course & dessert.
Distance: 8km, Ascent: 150m, Descent: 1050m, Walking time: Approx 3 Hrs
All good things must come to an end, yet our final day is packed with highlights. The day starts with a short climb before the descent starts. The descent starts through spruce forest, after a while opening up to a plateau where we get a final view of the Triglav and its surrounding peaks, allowing us to trace our route with our eyes.
The elevation decreases quickly with the steep trail and we soon reach a viewpoint with a fantastic vantage over Lake Bohinj and the peaks beyond. The white stony beaches and turquoise to deep blue waters are starting to call. Colourful dots on the lake indicate canoe boats exploring the lake.
The final descent takes us once again through beech forest. We have come full circle and land shortly below the gorge. A short walk back into Stara Fuzina, where a picnic lunch and lake dip call!
After a final relax at the lake, you can choose to make your way home or stay on for one or more nights to explore the wild water side of the Triglav area.
Accommodation: Twin rooms
Lunch: Picnic lunch.
Dinner: Not included.
As a group, we will choose a half day water sports activity. Either a canoe trip or SUP intro and hire.
The rest of the day is yours to explore Stara Fužina, the national park museum or simply relax in our hotel garden with your book and views back up to the Triglav and valleys we explored.
For those returning with us to Munich, we depart after breakfast. Retracing our steps back over the Alps by train.
Our base, the Hotel Bohinj, in Ribčev Laz lies on the shores of Lake Bohinj. With incredible lake and mountain views, comfortable en-suite rooms and a beautiful wellness area, it is the perfect spot to relax before and after the trek.
Along this trek we stay in traditional refuges which belong to the Slovenian Alpine clubs. These allow us to explore deep into this landscape and provide remote, idyllic and rugged settings.
As such they are serviced by helicopter and resources (water, electricity, phone connection etc) are limited.
We stay mostly in smaller rooms allocated for our group and larger dorm rooms.
Wash facilities are limited but in most huts, a small washroom is available for a “cat wash”. Some have showers available for an additional fee.
Dinner and breakfast are included.
