Private Herzogstand to Heimgarten Hike from Munich: Iconic Ridge-line & 360° Alpine Panoramas

This iconic traverse between the peaks of the Herzogstand and Heimgarten is on many a hiker’s bucket list. For good reason – as you cross the high limestone wall between the Kochelsee and Walchensee lakes, you get to soak up some of the most breath-taking views in the Bavarian Alps.

This long day hike is for strong hikers only, with good fitness for nearly 1200m of descent or ascent, a head for heights and scrambling skills.

The Ascent: Above the Two Lakes

Our journey begins at the Herzogstandbahn, where we leave the valley floor behind. Led by your private mountain guide, we wind our way up the mountainside, with views opening to the Walchensee below and peaks of the Karwendel above. Eventually, we reach the ridge of the Herzogstand with views across to emerald Kochelsee on the other side. Here we pass the Berggasthof Herzogstand, site of one of King Ludwig’s hunting lodges, before continuing through the dwarf pine to the pavillion of the Herzogstand.

It is here that the challenge really begins, with sweeping views across both lakes and on a clear day 360 panoramas across the Karwendel, Wetterstein, Ammergau and beyond. This is alpine hiking near Munich at its absolute best.

Under the professional support of your guide, you’ll navigate the well-established but narrow mountain path along the ridge line towards our second peak, the Heimgarten. Here we break to soak up the views and look back on our route so far. Below the peak we stop for a refreshment in the Heimgarten Hütte, before starting our descent through the meadows and forest to the Walchensee Lake. Here a refreshing dip, cold beer or ice cream – or all three await!

Two-day option

We also organise this as a two-day option including an overnight mountain hut stay at the Berggasthof Herzogstand. Including a sunset hike to the Herzogstand peak and hitting the ridge line the next morning before the crowds.

How do I get from Munich to Kochel am See?

Kochel is one of the most accessible alpine villages from Munich. There is a direct train (RB66) from Munich Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) that takes approximately 1 hour. With your booking confirmation, you will receive our Digital Travel Pack with precise platform numbers and ticket instructions.

A return group ticket for up to 5 people will cost you approx €40 for the group and will cover all public transportation within Munich that day too. See here

For further information about getting into the mountains by train in Bavaria check out our guide here.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety is our priority and we adapt our routes according to the weather conditions. We will always find the best route for the conditions given.

If the forecast predicts severe weather (severe weather warnings), we will contact you 24- 48 hours in advance. We offer the flexibility to reschedule to a different day or provide a full refund. However, a light drizzle often makes the waterfalls even more atmospheric, so we usually hike unless it is unsafe!

Is this hike truly "easy"? What fitness level is required?

Yes! This tour is specifically designed as a beginner-friendly alpine experience. We focus on forest paths and meadow trails with minimal elevation gain. If you can walk for 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace with breaks, you will find this hike very enjoyable. Since this is a private tour, we move at your speed.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are sufficient for this route (sturdy hiking boots are not required but welcome). We recommend "onion layering" - a T-shirt, a light fleece or sweater, and a waterproof rain jacket. Don't forget your swimwear and a towel if you’d like to dip in the lake at the end! You will receive a comprehensive list of what to bring with your booking confirmation.

For top tips on dressing for hiking see our blog here!

Are there bathrooms and food stops along the way?

Yes. There are facilities at the start/end points at the train station. We have also planned a stop at a traditional Bavarian hut or village café.

Can I bring my children on this tour?

Absolutely. This is one of our most popular family-friendly hikes near Munich. The grazing cows, waterfalls and lake views keep kids engaged and the terrain is safe for younger hikers.

When booking a tour with 4elements it is vital that you have adequate valid travel insurance covering the activities included. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate insurances and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the trip, including all optional activities. We also recommend Travel Cancellation Insurance (Reiserücktrittversicherung) in the case that you have to cancel a trip for any reason.

Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your country of residence. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter repatriation in the event of illness or injury - and covers the entire duration of your holiday. For this tour it is vital that you are covered for mountain search and rescue. One of the best offers for this is included in annual membership of the German Alpine Club Deutscher Alpenverein

If you are looking for insurance to cover a single hiking/ mountain tours (Wander- und Bergsportversicherung) or further insurances such as Travel Cancellation Insurance (Reiserücktrittversicherung), then we recommend the following provider for residents in Germany: Travel Secure
