Are you looking for a day escape from Munich that combines physical challenge, connection to nature and authentic Bavarian alpine culture? Then this day hike in the Bavarian Alps is for you!
This tour is the perfect choice for visitors to Bavaria who love to hike, experience breath-taking mountain panoramas and connect deeply with nature and culture through its unique landscapes, flora and fauna.
From the turquoise waters of Walchensee to the rolling plains toward Munich, the 360-degree views from the top are among the most iconic in the Bavarian Alps.
At 4elements, our hikes are more than just walking in the mountains. Each private guided hiking tour from Munich is designed to help you slow down, connect with nature, and experience the Bavarian Alps more deeply.
Along the trail, natural elements of mindfulness, creativity and discovery flow through our hike. Along the trail, we take time to pause, breathe and fully experience the forest, panoramas and mountain landscapes and to discover local flora, fauna, and alpine traditions through hands-on, engaging impulses.
Our journey begins at the historic Kesselberg Pass. Led by your private mountain guide, we wind through shaded forests and rocky paths that open up to reveal the "Two Lake View" - the deep blue Walchensee on one side and the emerald Kochelsee on the other. This is alpine hiking near Munich at its absolute best. Along the way, we may stop to look at rare mountain flowers, or tracks of mountain goats, who travel along these mountainsides.
The 1565m summit of the Jochberg offers us 360 views and invites us to pause and soak up the panoramas and sense of perspective that these mountain moments offer us.
We then descend toward a traditional Bavarian mountain Alm. This isn't just a rest and toilet stop; it’s an opportunity to taste the Alps. Depending on the season, you can enjoy fresh local produce - from a traditional alpine “Jause” with local hams and cheeses to a freshly made Kaiserschmarrn (the tastiest of Bavarian pancakes!)
Our journey concludes along the waters of the pristine Walchensee Lake. Famed for its deep, turquoise waters – this is one of the most stunning – and refreshing - lakes in the Bavarian Alps.
Known for its fresh temperatures, Walchensee offers a revitalizing end to an active day. For the brave, you can take a full plunge into the icy, crystal-clear waters or simply dip your toes while soaking in the final views of the surrounding peaks. It is the ultimate natural reward after a fabulous hike!
This medium-level Bavarian Alps experience is designed for curious travelers, nature enthusiasts and hikers who believe that the summit is only one chapter of a much larger story. While reaching the Jochberg peak offers a stunning 360-degree reward, our focus is on the rich, sensory details found along every step of the trail.
The route follows well-established mountain paths with a steady elevation gain of 710m. We maintain a "slow travel" pace, allowing time for our activities - pausing to identify wild alpine herbs, practicing mindful breathing in the forest or simply soaking in the silence of the high pastures. While a solid level of fitness is required for the uphill stretches (approx. 2 to 2.5 hours of active movement), your private 4elements guide ensures the journey is balanced with moments of rest and reflection, leaving you feeling invigorated rather than just exhausted.
Please see the Tour Fitness / Technical scale for further information regarding difficulty grading.

Safety is our priority and we adapt our routes according to the weather conditions. We will always find the best route for the conditions given.
If the forecast predicts severe weather (severe weather warnings), we will contact you 24- 48 hours in advance. In this case we offer the flexibility to reschedule to a different day or provide a full refund.
While no technical climbing is required, this hike is medium difficulty. With 710m of ascent, you should have a good base level of fitness and be comfortable walking uphill for roughly 2.5 hours. If you prefer something flatter, check out our [Easy Kochel Waterfall Hike] LINK: Easy day hike Kochel
For this peak, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support and a solid profile are highly recommended. Trekking poles can be helpful for the descent (and can be loaned upon request).
We recommend "onion layering" - a T-shirt (quick-drying- synthetic/ merino), a light fleece or windstopper and a waterproof rain jacket. Don't forget your swimwear and a towel if you’d like to dip in the lake at the end! You will receive a comprehensive list of what to bring with your booking confirmation.

Bathroom facilities are available at the Kochel train station at the start and end of our day. During the hike, we will visit a Bavarian mountain farm (Alm). This is a rustic, working farm where you can use the facilities and purchase local produce, fresh snacks, and drinks. We typically schedule our main break here to enjoy the views and the authentic alpine atmosphere.
This is a medium-level summit hike. We recommend this tour for active children (typically ages 10+) who have experience walking uphill and a good level of stamina. For families with younger children or those looking for a more relaxed pace, our Easy Kochel Waterfall Tour is a fantastic alternative.
When booking a tour with 4elements it is vital that you have adequate valid travel insurance covering the activities included. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate insurances and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the trip, including all optional activities. We also recommend Travel Cancellation Insurance (Reiserücktrittversicherung) in the case that you have to cancel a trip for any reason.
Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your country of residence. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter repatriation in the event of illness or injury - and covers the entire duration of your holiday. For this tour it is vital that you are covered for mountain search and rescue. One of the best offers for this is included in annual membership of the German Alpine Club Deutscher Alpenverein
If you are looking for insurance to cover a single hiking/ mountain tours (Wander- und Bergsportversicherung) or further insurances such as Travel Cancellation Insurance (Reiserücktrittversicherung), then we recommend the following provider for residents in Germany: Travel Secure
