Train travel from Munich is a great way of getting out of the city and experiencing more of Bavaria. The train network is extensive providing direct links between central Munich and various mountain towns where you have a range of different hikes direct from the train station.

The trains themselves are a clean, regular, efficient and of course, train travel is an environmentally- friendly way of exploring. Additionally there are some fantastic ticket offers which mean that train travel in Germany (and especially from Munich into the mountains) is really simple and cost-effective.

Here we have put together a few of the different options and short films to help you find your way around, visualise your train journey and buy your ticket.

The free to download Deutsche Bahn App is a neat way of buying tickets and managing your travel when you are out and about in Germany.

You can also purchase your ticket in advance or on the day from any Deutsche Bahn ticket machine using cash or card. There are plenty of machines around Central station as well as directly at the start of the platforms 27-36. You can change the language of the cash machine into multiple languages (German, English, French, Italian)

Online

You can also buy your ticket as a guest on the Deutsche Bahn website. The ticket will then be emailed to you. Make sure you have this handy for the journey, as you will need to show it to the train conductor.

Which ticket to buy?

Here are the most common tickets for train travel in Bavaria. Prices given are second class.

The Bayern Ticket
  • €25 for one person.
  • Unlimited travel within Bavaria (including all city public transportation)
  • Valid from 9am on day of travel until 3am the next day.
  • On weekends its valid from midnight.
  • Travel in groups of up to 5 people for additional charge of only €7 per person.
  • Children up to 5 travel free.
  • Children up to 15 years of age if travelling with two paying adults (at least one of which is parent/ grandparent) travel free of charge also.

The Regio-Ticket Werdenfels
  • €22 for one person.
  • Unlimited travel within the Regio-Werdenfels network (trains, Oberbayern -RVO bus network) – see map below (including Munich City S-Bahn) – Destinations include: Starnberg, Benediktbeuern, Kochel, Murnau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald.
  • Valid from midnight on day of travel for full day.
  • Travel in groups of up to 5 people for additional charge of only €7 per person.
  • Children up to 6 travel free.
  • Three children between 6-14 years of age travel for free if travelling with two paying adults
  • For an extra €7 you can purchase the Regio- Ticket Werdenfels +Innsbruck and travel all the way to the Austrian city of Innsbruck

German Train Travel: Good- to –know!
  • You do not need to show your ticket to get on and off the trains or platforms in Germany. But your tickets will most definitely be checked on the train.
  • Travelling without the ticket “Schwarz fahren” carries hefty on-the-spot fines, so don’t forget to double-check that you have your ticket or if you have it on a mobile device that you have it accessible.
  • The Regio Werdenfels trains have power points above the seats for your electronics.
  • The Regio Werdenfels trains are wheelchair accessible, and have spaces for bike and ski loading. Look for the wheelchair and bike sign on the door to enter the correct part of the train.
  • Most carriages have toilets and a “children’s corner”
  • TV screens in the carriages show your journey progress, timing updates and next stop information.
